On July 9th, we took a train into Rotterdam, to spend the day at the zoo. The trip with our OV-chipkaarts¬†cost us about 12.00 Euro each, round trip. Entrance to the zoo is about 22.50, a piece. The first animals we got to see, as we came in the front gate, were the flamingos. Their feathers are pale pink and their beaks remind me of the toucan’s. As we watched this large group of birds, we noticed that some o9f them appeared to be the leaders of the group, as they walked around with their heads held high, and their necks outstretched, strutting their stuff.

The zoo was huge and included animals from all, seven continents. I found the most interesting to be the Forest Giraffe, from the Republic of Congo, in Africa. It has the face of a giraffe, but it has stripes like a zebra, on its front legs and hindquarters. The turtles from the Galapagos were really interesting, and with such a heavy load to carry, no wonder they move so slowly!

The highlight of the Rotterdam Zoo is the aquarium with its enormous tank of sea creatures, including, sharks, stingrays, sea turtles, eels, and all sorts of colorful fish, that swim all around you.

When we reached the end of our tour, we realized that we were at the opposite gate from where we came in, and we decided to take the small train back to where we had started. It was a great day and we were exhausted!
